Ordinarily, one can easily lose the momentum of reading a book over pages long. But this book I could hardly put down, and in the brief periods when I had to do so, to eat or sleep, I was in a nervous frenzy to get back to it. Thorne's subject is relativity and space-time - the book is subtitled "Einstein's outrageous legacy" - and he traces its development from the discoveries that led Einstein to formulate the theory of relativity, right down to present day speculations many of them due to him about the possibility of time travel. The famous black holes of the title are the result of relativity's seemingly preposterous, but inescapable, conclusion that space-time contains singularities - regions where gravity appears to be infinite at least until quantum effects are considered. The need to investigate what the properties of these peculiar objects must be has been the crucible in which much of the refinement of relativity theory has taken place, and they occupy a central place in the book. Thorne's development of the subject is largely chronological, except where clarity demands that the exposition engage in a little time travel of its own.

There are books we love and books we hate, and then there are books that irrevocably change our lives; for me, that book is "Black Holes and Time Warps" by Kip Thorne. I first heard the name Kip Thorne during my third year working on an undergraduate degree in physics, when my friend Dan gave me a beat-up paperback copy of Thorne's book, " Black Holes and Time Warps: Einstein's Outrageous Legacy. When Dan gave me the book we were both neck-deep in thermodynamics, stellar spectra, Brownian motion and all the things we had to cram into our heads to earn our degrees.

The biographical presentations are sympathetic and take care to show how the researchers' ideas could develop - or not develop - in the research environment of their time and place. This could happen with any and all of the material that had ever fallen into the black hole uoles its lifetime.The behavior of this space and the material which approaches it are not well understood, with a complete marriage of relativity and quantum physics yet to be achieved. The last chapter which was about wormholes and the possibility of time machines was more like science fiction based on absurd assumptions! To tell you the truth I'm really skeptical on the concept of time travel.
