As a child, Del Kathryn Barton was always drawn to stories and artworks that held an abundance of emotion. The moment she read Oscar Wilde's story The Nightingale and the Rose , she felt it was a world she could recognise and understand. I do like being moved to tears — it's something I look for in life — sincerity and deep feeling. Barton's lusciously illustrated version of Wilde's story came into being in after she was approached by publisher Elenora Triguboff to do a fairy story that would appeal across generations. The project quickly turned into her beautifully illustrated The Nightingale and the Rose and was incredibly successful when published. Early in its life, Barton and her filmmaker friend Brendan Fletcher talked about turning the book into an animation, something that was entirely new to Barton — and a new exploration for Fletcher, too. After an enormous amount of arduous work, the film premiered a year ago, featuring the voices of Mia Wasikowska, David Wenham and Geoffrey Rush, and a rich score penned by singer-songwriter Sarah Blasko.
