Del Kathryn Barton: The Nightingale and the Rose | ACMI

This exhibition is touring throughout Australia. It was a serendipitous moment when in , Barton casually mentioned to acclaimed Australian filmmaker Brendan Fletcher that she was eager to make her Nightingale works into a short film. Despite neither having an animation background, Barton and Fletcher were inspired by their shared vision to offer something new and special to the field. Over the next three years, Barton and Fletcher worked with award-winning post-production house Method Studios to create their minute animation. Celebrating both the film itself and the exemplary processes behind its creation, Del Kathryn Barton: The Nightingale and the Rose invites visitors into a truly immersive Nightingale world.

As a child, Del Kathryn Barton was always drawn to stories and artworks that held an abundance of emotion. The moment she read Oscar Wilde's story The Nightingale and the Rose , she felt it was a world she could recognise and understand. I do like being moved to tears — it's something I look for in life — sincerity and deep feeling. Barton's lusciously illustrated version of Wilde's story came into being in after she was approached by publisher Elenora Triguboff to do a fairy story that would appeal across generations. The project quickly turned into her beautifully illustrated The Nightingale and the Rose and was incredibly successful when published. Early in its life, Barton and her filmmaker friend Brendan Fletcher talked about turning the book into an animation, something that was entirely new to Barton — and a new exploration for Fletcher, too. After an enormous amount of arduous work, the film premiered a year ago, featuring the voices of Mia Wasikowska, David Wenham and Geoffrey Rush, and a rich score penned by singer-songwriter Sarah Blasko.
